"The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect."
-- Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the World Wide Web

What is Accessibility?

Accessibility is giving people with visual, audio, mobility, mental and other handicaps the very same access to information that everyone else has. If the rest of us can get a certain piece of information by logging on a website at 3 am, so should those with handicaps.

High Accessibility Website

In an effort to provide a website unconstrained by compromise (unfortunately required by the state of technology) we created a second, parallel website. We call this a High Accessibility Website.

The High Accessibility website removes design compromises that reduce accessibility. The High Accessibility version:

  • contains identical articles and information as our Regular Accessibility Website
  • uses less decorative graphics and hence is faster loading
  • allows text resizing - you can make the text 'regular', large and extra large size
  • provides greater text-to-background contrast for easier reading
  • ... and other methods and means to increase accessibility

The High Accessibility version will also benefit people who have very slow internet connections.

ABC-webdesign & graphics, inc is continually trying to improve accessibility of all our websites. If you have a suggestion or idea to make it better, let us know.

Credits

ABC-webdesign & graphics would like to thank Leesa Lavigne of the State of Maine for sharing her knowledge of making more accessible websites. We have a lot to learn but thanks to Leesa and the State of Maine's leadership in this area, we've come a long way. Visit the state's website section on accessibility.
